NYS Representative Seeks Higher Office

As we close in on the 2020 local, regional, and national elections, many positions in Congress are up for election during this nationwide contest. I have chosen to focus this blog post on a local who is running for Congress. She is presently an assembly woman representing the 64th District in New York State which is represents Bay Ridge, Brooklyn and Staten Island. Nicole Malliotakis is a republican candidate running for Congress representing New York’s 11th Congressional District, which is a seat in the U.S. House of Representatives. Malliotakis has been endorsed by the Conservative parties in New York and has support from the White House.

Upon examination of her website, (https://nicolemalliotakis.com/), we are able to explore different sections of her platform which represents her view on various topics that are important to the people she intends to represent.

The website has a page which outlines the ongoing issues that the candidate has expressed a desire to explore and fight for when she is elected to Congress. Nicole has a varied platform with regards to the issues facing New York. Some of the underlying planks in her platform include fighting for improvements and funding for education. Another critical issue is her position on the environment, where she states strong support for clean air and water as well as continued funding for residents who suffered damage due to Hurricane Sandy. Nicole is also a strong supporter of a comprehensive health car solution and is an advocate for individuals with pre-existing conditions and supports lower prescription drug pricing. Malliotakis also believes in strengthening our border security and opposes sanctuary city policies as well as state tuition and drivers’ licenses’ to undocumented immigrants. She has successfully lead the fight to block the voter registration of illegal immigrants.

As part of our course, we touched upon the theory of Social Judgment (SJT), which is defined as the perception and evaluation of an idea by comparing it with current attitudes or positions. Based on the theory of Social Judgment, I support the majority of the candidate’s positions based on my opinions and experiences in those areas of discussion. Nicole Malliotakis’ platform and position on the issues is, to me, a realistic approach to current political turmoil. I believe that we should maintain a realistic approach to the issues which face our government. We must both look at the economic and social issues that have been exaggerated by the media. By examining the platforms of the candidates running for office, individuals must be educated as to how their elected representatives will act on their behalf.
